Sara-Elizabeth Cottrell of Musicuentos has an ongoing list of activities that students can choose from for their own weekly fluency activities, which can involve different levels of student accountability and evidence.

 

Cottrell also has a unique take on final projects, wherein students design their own "exams."

 

Bethanie Drew: I adapted Sara-Elizabeth's idea for my Spanish 3 class and called it "Choose Your Own Adventure".  Students rated it highly, and I'll keep it for next year.  The descriptions of the options are here, and the student log is here.  I'd love to explore making this a paperless project via Evernote for next year.

I have had great success with using "choice boards" (Kristy Placido's original idea) or as I call them "assignment menu." These have different points values and then a variety of options at each point level. The students must choose 1 from each point value. For example, a 10 point choice, a 20 point choice, and a 30 point choice. If you put some thought into the types of assignments ahead of time, these are FANTASTIC to use with novels! Bethanie-Is there a reason why you had them due on a Tuesday? I have block scheduling and I am trying to figure out how something like this would work for us.

Hi Sarah, Yes. We are on 4x4 block, and it was just a day that worked well consistently. While I'd like to say that it was for a great pedagogical reason, it was actually because Tuesdays and Wednesdays were the best days for me to grade/give feedback due to meetings on other days and responsibilities on particular nights at home.

Students also had the opportunity to work ahead if it suited them, which many appreciated as well. The goals for me were simply for them to regularly use their developing language skills outside of class and to explore things that interested them. As a result, it was easy to be flexible with the assignment and yet still achieve our goals. I hope it will work for you!
