Unit Themes

Page history last edited by Jordan Yeager 10 years, 10 months ago

GOAL: develop two units of study each for Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced proficiency levels, complete with summative assessments, strategies and activities, Pinterest resource text boards, and Google Drive folders of supporting materials.

The College Board has 6 established themes for AP language study:

      • Beauty and Aesthetics
Architecture, Defining beauty, Defining creativity, Fashion & design, Language & literature, Visual & performing arts
      • Contemporary Life
Education & careers, Entertainment, Travel & leisure, Lifestyles, Relationships, Social customs & values, Volunteerism
      • Families and Communities
Customs & values, Educational communities, Family structure, Global citizenship, Human geography, Social networking
      • Global Challenges
Economic issues, Environmental issues, Philosophical thought & religion, Population demographics, Social welfare, Social conscience
      • Personal and Public Identities
Alienation & assimilation, Heroes & historical figures, National & ethnic identities, Personal beliefs, Personal interests, Self-image
      • Science and Technology
Access to technology, Effects of technology on self & society, Health care & medicine, Innovations, Natural phenomena, Science & ethics

These themes provide a goal for vertical alignment at all levels of language instruction and rich foundations for engaging language and culture study, including problem-based learning units.

Pinterest Boards

We have created group Pinterest boards for each theme to which you may pin sources that you think fit with the themes. The purpose of the Pinterest boards specifically is to collect authentic texts and comprehensible input (including written as well as audio and video) that apply to the units indicated by the summative assessments.

Google Drive Folders

Within the LangCamp 2013 Google Drive Folder, we've added folders by theme where you can add supporting documents such as rubrics and handouts and other things we might create ourselves--individually or collaboratively--or already have in document form.
