Types of Authentic Resources

Picture Books

    • Classics adapted as graphic novels

    • Target culture kids' books

      • Legends
      • Stories with social skills
    • Translations of familiar kids' books

Target Culture Photos

Strategies

Online copies

    • Scan/photograph pages from the book to create copies using Adobe PDF creator, Powerpoint, Google Slides, Keynote, etc.
    • Use scans/photos for sequencing or matching activities to preview the book or demonstrate comprehension during or after reading.
    • Use scanned versions to remove key words for students to fill in.
    • Have students retell the story using only the scans/photos, perhaps adapting translations to target culture (e.g. what would Very Hungry Caterpillar eat in France?)

Class Storytime

    • Preview the pictures of the book and have students use the TL to name things they see (activate prior knowledge and help anticipate what they'll see/hear); when the student gets one right, pass the class bandera to him or her.

Literature Circles

    • Assign students to small groups of no more than 5 (or let them choose). Each student must have a designated role (assigned or chosen)
    • Possible roles:
      • Speaker--reads the text aloud, pausing for comprehension and pronunciation checks where necessary
      • Vocabulary tracker--identifies and looks up new vocabulary
      • Structure searcher--identifies and records familiar language structures in context
      • Cultural connector--identifies similarities and differences between target culture and home culture, connects to familiar contexts
      • Literary critic--identifies elements of fiction/nonfiction and how they help
      • Question director--leads discussion at appropriate intervals and afterward (original or preset questions), probes further
